About Us

Our Story

Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care in Frederick County, Maryland, offers elderly clients personal and companion home care services to help them remain safely in their own homes.

Deacon John & Angela Martin, 42-year residents of Walkersville, were inspired in 2011 to open a senior care agency after several years of experience helping Angela’s parents navigate the challenges of aging in place.

“When my mother had serious stroke in 1998,” she recalls, “we experienced first-hand the difficulty of finding professional caregivers to help us keep her at home. My father wanted to be her primary caregiver, but some tasks were just too much for him. We hired and fired several caregivers before finding satisfactory care. Our goal for Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care is to provide our clients with the kind of professional, compassionate care we wanted for my Mom.”

A long-time leader in the pro-life movement, Angela retired from her position at Maryland Right to Life in order to open Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care. She sees this as a natural extension of her deeply held belief that every human life is precious — regardless of age, appearance, or degree of disability. “I will ensure that every caregiver we hire recognizes the inherent dignity of every human person,” she promises.

John currently works at an engineering firm three days a week and helps at Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care part-time. A deacon in the Catholic Church, he developed a deep respect for the elderly while doing pastoral ministry at what was then St. Catherine’s Nursing Center (now St. Joseph Ministries) in Emmitsburg. “The elderly have such wonderful stories,” he says. “They have so much to give if we only take the time to listen.”

“Shepard’s Staff In-home care has caregivers with integrity. They will do what they say they will do! They pay attention to their clients.”

We believe that every life has intrinsic value;
That the elderly have contributed their greatness to the world
And deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

We reject the idea that loneliness and loss of dignity are an expected part of aging.

We insist on respect for all people,
Regardless of their physical capability, mental capacity or the functions
they may have lost.

We are motivated by love.
That’s not a word that gets used in business —
But we are not like other businesses.

We believe that our highest purpose is not profit, but service to others…

Service that is inspired by genuine compassion and
carried out with responsibility, integrity, and professionalism.

We believe in a leadership that listens and cares, and is openly transparent.

We believe that people are more important than profit.

We are Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care – we’re here to serve.

According to the U.S. Administration on Aging, people age 65 years or older make up about 15 percent of the U.S. population. Seniors number about 49.2 million and their ranks are growing. Many older people live alone, and some are finding it increasingly difficult to do the things they want to do safely.

Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care envisions a world in which senior citizens age gracefully, socialize regularly, and live confidently. We want to make a positive difference in the aging experience for the members of our community by providing service that is personalized, professional, dependable and respectful.
