Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care provides personal and companion care services to elderly clients in Frederick County and the surrounding area.
John and Angela Martin, 39-year residents of Walkersville, founded Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care in 2011. The inspiration to open a senior care business came from Angela’s parents.
“When my mother had serious stroke in 1998,” she recalls, “we experienced first-hand the difficulty of finding professional caregivers to help us keep her at home. My father wanted to be her primary caregiver, but some tasks were just too much for him. We hired and fired several caregivers before finding satisfactory care. Our goal is to provide our clients with the kind of professional, compassionate care we wanted for my Mom.”
A long-time leader in the pro-life movement, Angela retired from her position at Maryland Right to Life in order to open Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care. She sees this as a natural extension of her deeply held belief that every human life is precious — regardless of age, appearance, or degree of disability. “I will ensure that every caregiver we hire recognizes the inherent dignity of every human person,” she promises.
John currently works at an engineering firm three days a week and helps at Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care on Mondays and Fridays. A deacon in the Catholic Church, he developed a deep respect for the elderly while doing pastoral ministry at what was then St. Catherine’s Nursing Center (now St. Joseph Ministries) in Emmitsburg. “The elderly have such wonderful stories,” he says. “They have so much to give if we only take the time to listen.”
The Need for Senior Home Care
According to the U.S. Administration on Aging, people age 65 years or older make up about 14.5 percent of the U.S. population. Seniors number about 46.2 million and their ranks are growing. Many older people — about 42.8 percent of them — live alone. Some are finding it increasingly difficult to do the things they want to do safely.
Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care envisions a world in which senior citizens age gracefully, socialize regularly, and live confidently. We want to make a positive difference in the aging experience for citizens of our community by providing service that is personalized, professional, dependable and respectful.
