7 Ways to Improve Memory

Have you ever walked into a room and said to yourself “I know I came in here to do something, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what it was?” Do you misplace things like your car keys regularly? Or do you forget people’s names, like the server at your favorite restaurant? We all forget things occasionally, so it isn’t all that unusual. However, memory loss should not be taken lightly so we’re going to talk about some ways to improve memory before it becomes an issue.

1.     Sleep

When you don’t get enough rest, you tend to experience brain fog making it harder to concentrate. While we sleep, our brain processes the day and puts the necessary information into memory. According to Help Guide, the average adult needs 7 – 9 hours of sleep per night. So make sure you’re getting enough sleep and quality sleep.

2.     Exercise

Physical activity is good for your entire body, even your brain. The increase in blood flow and oxygen helps keep your mind healthy and your memory sharp. Not to mention, stress levels are lower in those that exercise, and moods are known to be improved, as well.

3.     Get organized

Having a routine and being organized helps to clear the “clutter” from our minds, so we aren’t as distracted by the little things. For example, have a central location for the things you use every day, like a purse or wallet and car keys. This way, you’ll always know where to find these items, and you won’t have to go looking for them or remember where they are. Remember the old saying, “A place for everything and everything in its place?” Well, it still holds today. Additionally, keeping a planner will help keep your social life organized, so you don’t miss appointments or important dates with friends and family.

4.     Stay social

Social interaction not only helps memory, but it helps your mood, warding off depression and stressors which can attribute to memory loss. Stay social and improve memory with book clubs, card games and more. Not only will you be doing good things for yourself, but you’ll help your friends stay active and working to improve memory for them, too!

5.     Proper nutrition

A healthy diet is just as good for your brain as it is for the rest of your body. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is a great way to improve memory and live a healthier life overall. Stay clear of over-indulging in alcohol, as it contributes to confusion and loss of memory.

6.     Exercise your memory

Do you recall playing the memory game when you were a child? You know, the cards that you place face down and try to match 2 and if you pair them all then you win the game? These types of games can be just as much fun today and function as a great way to improve memory. You can also try word search games, crossword puzzles or even the electronic game, Simon. You’ll be amazed at how much these things can help your memory.

7.     Visit your doctor

Sometimes, memory loss can be caused by other medical conditions. Additionally, medications could have some side effects that would affect your memory. If you have any concerns regarding your memory or you notice memory loss affecting your ability to do the day to day tasks, talk to your doctor.

Practice these habits and tips to keep your brain sharp and work to improve memory over time. If you need additional help, please feel free to reach out to Shepherd’s Staff In-home Care – we are happy to help.
